Kenya Advances Zero-Emission Freight Agenda at Africa EV Freight Forum
Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing electric mobility and sustainable freight transport as stakeholders from across Africa and beyond convened in Nairobi for the inaugural Africa EV Freight Forum.
The two-day forum, co-organized by Smart Freight Centre and Intro Africa in partnership with the Ministry of Roads and Transport through the State Department for Transport, brings together government representatives, freight operators, financiers, development partners and technology providers to explore practical pathways for scaling zero-emission freight across East Africa.
The opening session featured remarks from the Principal Secretary, State Department for Transport, Mr. Mohamed Daghar, CBS, delivered on his behalf by the Director, Road and Rail Transport, Mr. Paul Kingori.
In his remarks, he underscored the importance of collaboration among government, the private sector and development partners in advancing cleaner and more efficient transport systems. He noted that the engagement complements ongoing efforts to strengthen Kenya’s policy, legal and institutional framework for electric mobility.
Discussions during the first day focused on moving electric freight from demonstrations towards commercial deployment, with emphasis on infrastructure, investment, policy, technology and partnerships.
A presentation on “On the Road” showcased electric vehicle expeditions along African trade corridors, demonstrating the potential for electric buses, pickups and trucks to undertake long-distance journeys when supported by appropriate planning, charging infrastructure and stakeholder coordination. Participants also examined challenges including limited charging facilities and delays at border crossings.
During a panel discussion on corridor development and climate competitiveness, Mr. Kingori highlighted the role of integrated national transport planning in supporting electric mobility, alternative fuels and emerging technologies such as hydrogen.
Ms. Susan Kamau, Road and Rail Rail Transport Officer in the State Department for Transport, speaking during the session on “Policy to Deliver Benefits”, outlined government efforts to coordinate Kenya’s e-mobility agenda across five thematic areas covering policy and regulation, energy, innovation, skills and financing. She also highlighted the review of the legal framework governing road transport to address emerging developments, including electric mobility and intelligent transport systems.
