Dongo Kundu SEZ Moves Closer to Unlocking Its Economic Potential
The development of the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is gaining momentum, with key infrastructure projects progressing towards establishing the area as a major hub for trade, investment and industrial growth.
Transport Principal Secretary Mr. Mohamed Daghar led a delegation of senior government officials on an inspection of the ongoing development, including the Dongo Kundu Berth One (DK1) and investor facilities within the SEZ.
The Sh41 billion berth project, currently 16 per cent complete, is expected to be completed by December 2028. The 300-metre facility will serve industries within the SEZ, improving cargo handling and helping reduce logistics costs for investors.
The inspection also covered progress in supporting infrastructure, including electricity, water utilities and transport connectivity, as well as investor facilities such as Taifa Gas, whose development is now 85 per cent complete.
With 94 investors already expressing interest in setting up operations within Dongo Kundu, the 3,000-acre development is expected to significantly contribute to investment, job creation and regional trade.
Once fully operational, the SEZ is projected to create approximately 5,600 direct jobs, while the port component will strengthen connectivity between maritime, road and rail networks.
The inspection reaffirmed the Government’s focus on ensuring that strategic transport infrastructure is delivered efficiently to support economic growth, trade and investment.
