Cabinet Secretary Leads Tree Growing Exercise at Dongo Kundu Creek, Kwale County

The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Mr. Davis Chirchir led a tree-growing exercise at Dongo Kundu Creek, Kwale County, on Mazingira Day. The exercise, undertaken in collaboration with the local community, witnessed the planting of 10,100 mangrove seedlings in a bid to restore degraded ecosystems, safeguard the environment and combat the climate change crisis.

The CS was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, Director Generals of State Agencies (SAGAs) and Ministry staff.

“The rehabilitation efforts of the forest, not only aim to restore the environment but also provide employment opportunities to the local communities through activities such as site preparation, planting, weeding and protecting the trees from livestock,” said the CS during the exercise.

“These initiatives play a critical role in advancing the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by promoting the creation of green jobs, bolstering food security and supporting sustainable development,” added the CS.

October 10th, Mazingira Day, was gazetted as a Public Holiday for all Kenyans to participate in environmental conservation activities including tree planting. This is in line with the Government’s efforts towards accelerating forest restoration and ensuring that fifteen (15) billion trees are planted by 2032, in order to address the adverse effects of climate change.
