Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Concludes Successful Working Tour in Lamu County
The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport successfully concluded his first official working tour since assuming office last week. The tour focused on key infrastructural and economic developments in Lamu, a region poised for significant growth due to recent and ongoing projects.
The Cabinet Secretary's first stop was the LAPSSET ministerial conference held in Majlis, Lamu, where he engaged with key stakeholders on the progress and future direction of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor. The conference highlighted the strategic importance of LAPSSET in enhancing regional connectivity and boosting economic growth, with particular emphasis on the benefits to Lamu and its surrounding areas.
Following the conference, the Cabinet Secretary visited the newly opened Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Area. This SEZ has been made more accessible through the development of a new road, which is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and drive investment. The SEZ is strategically positioned to capitalize on the Lamu Port's opportunities, attracting businesses and industries that will contribute to the region's economic transformation.
The Cabinet Secretary then proceeded to Lamu Port, where he conducted an inspection of the ongoing installation of newly acquired gantries. These state-of-the-art gantries, once operational, will be a game-changer for the port's operations, improving efficiency and increasing the port's capacity to handle large volumes of cargo. The installation is nearing completion, and the gantries are set to be launched soon, marking a significant milestone for the port and the broader LAPSSET Corridor.
Concluding his tour, the Cabinet Secretary visited Manda Airport, where he inspected the runway. Concerns have been raised about a section of the runway that is currently facing pothole challenges. The Cabinet Secretary assured the county's leadership that this issue will be addressed promptly and effectively, ensuring that the airport continues to operate safely and efficiently.
Throughout the tour, the Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by a high-profile delegation, including H.E. Governor Issa Timamy, LAPSSET Chair Hon. Mbogo, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Chair Hon. Tayari, the Director General of LAPSSET, the Managing Director of KPA, the Managing Director of Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO), and the CEO of the SEZ. The delegation also included the Cabinet Secretary's counterpart from South Sudan, underscoring the regional significance of the projects visited.
The Cabinet Secretary's tour has not only provided a clear signal of the government's commitment to infrastructural development in Lamu but also emphasized the region's potential as a key economic hub in East Africa.
