Matatu Owners Association - National Delegates Conference

The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Hon Kipchumba Murkomen today joined the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) during their National Delegates Conference at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC).

During this conference, the MOA also used the occasion to celebrate its 20th anniversary. 

The CS acknowledged the immense contribution  that the matatu sector played in growing the country's economy and the available opportunities that exist to mainstream the sector and make it more profitable and better organised.

Hon. Murkomen said that the government has instituted an array of measures aimed at improving the operational environment of the industry including the establishment of Transport Saccos to enhance self-regulation, replacing driver retesting programme with Driver Development Programme as a booster course to impart drivers with complimentary and professional skills, and development of a road map towards the launch of a cashless payment system to tame leakages, stop corruption on the road and promote accountability.

He said the Ministry of Roads and Transport was working with stakeholders in  the sub-sector to fast-track a shift from petrol and diesel powered vehicles to electric vehicles in an effort to combat climate change, as well as promote their participation in the planned rollout if the Bus Rapid Transist (BRT) system as a way of reducing traffic congestion, promoting safety and security of passengers and drivers, and enhancing efficiency and proffesionalism in the industry.

 Present was the MOA President Albert Karakacha, his predecessor Simon Kimutai, NTSA Director General, George Njao, representatives from various Matatu Saccos, representatives from the office of the Inspector General of Police, key industry players and facilitators among others.
