Cabinet Secretary Leads Signing of Intergovernmental Partnership to Upgrade Narok Airport
The Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Mr. Davis Chirchir, spearheaded the signing of a landmark Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement (IPA) to upgrade and modernize Narok Airport, marking a major step forward on the enhancement of aviation infrastructure.
The IPA was signed in a ceremony attended by Governor of Narok County, H.E. Patrick Ole Ntutu who signed on behalf of the county and the Principal Secretary, Ms Teresia Mbaika on behalf of the implementing State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development.
This formalized the cooperation between the Ministry of Roads and Transport and Narok County Government on the construction, upgrade, and ongoing maintenance of the aerodrome that will include a 1.5 kilometre runway , 2 taxi ways, a terminal building, supporting amenities and fencing among other utilities.
The IPA was endorsed by the Office of the Attorney General as consistent with the Constitution and existing legislation on intergovernmental relations, the agreement clarifies roles, funding arrangements, and implementation timelines, while also embedding environmental safeguards, community engagement, and compliance with Civil Aviation Authority safety standards.
Speaking at the signing, Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said: “This partnership is about transforming the Narok Airport into a modern, safe, and efficient gateway that unlocks the full potential of tourism in one of Kenya’s most iconic destinations. By upgrading the airport, we are not only improving access for tourists and goods but also creating jobs and business opportunities for local communities, while strengthening regional connectivity and positioning Maasai Mara as a premier aviation linked tourism hub.”
The upgraded airport is expected to enhance passenger experience, support safe operations for commercial and charter flights, and facilitate faster, more reliable movement of goods and services. The project will also deepen integration between national and county governments in infrastructure development and set a model for intergovernmental collaboration in the aviation sector and unlock economic opportunities for local communities.
