President Ruto and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni Launch Construction of Naivasha-Kisumu-Malaba SGR Section

His Excellency President William Ruto and his Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni on Saturday flagged off the construction of the Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) line in Kisumu, marking a significant step toward strengthening regional transport and trade connectivity.

The President in his speech said the Kenya-Uganda Railway, a colonial infrastructure traversing Kenya from the Coast to the Western region and into Uganda, profoundly shaped the geography and economic trajectory of our region.

It laid the foundation upon which towns emerged, grew, and evolved into thriving urban centres and cities. By catalyzing trade and unlocking economic potential, the railway determined which centres flourished into vibrant metropolises, becoming lifelines of commerce and connectivity across East Africa.

As he launched the Kisumu-Malaba section of the SGR, alongside Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, said they are confident that this modern infrastructure will replicate and surpass that legacy by igniting new growth corridors.

The planned extension of the SGR from Uganda to DR Congo, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi and beyond will further unlock regional opportunities, stimulating fresh waves of economic activity and deepening integration in our region.

The event was attended by the Prime Cabinet Secretary Dr. Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Mr. Davis Chirchir, Governor Kisumu Peter Anyang' Nyong'o,Principal Secretary State Department for Transport Mohamed Daghar, alongside other national and local leaders.
