Institutions under the State Department of Transport

The State Department has overall policy coordination and responsibility over its affiliated State Corporations namely;

  1. Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA): KCAA is responsible for regulation and provision of air navigation services in the aviation industry in order to ensure safe, efficient and effective civil aviation systems in Kenya and management of the East African School of Aviation.
  2. Kenya Airports Authority (KAA): KAA manages commercially viable aerodromes in the country to facilitate air transport services, maintains, rehabilitates and constructs airstrips on an agency
  1. Kenya Ports Authority (KPA): KPA manages the ports along the coastline that provides the expansive hinterland of mainland Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan and Uganda with transport link to the outside world. KPA also manages Bandari College.
  1. Kenya Ferry Services (KFS): KFS provides free ferry services to pedestrian public across the Likoni and Mtongwe channels on the Indian Ocean. KFS remains an important Agency for providing the only link between the mainland and the island
  2. Kenya National Shipping Line (KNSL): KNSL was established with the objective of being a national carrier in the maritime industry.
  3. Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC): The Corporation is mandated to oversee development of the Railway infrastructure, monitor and regulate the performance of the concessionaire (Rift Valley Railway) and also manage non-concessioned assets. In addition, KRC manages Railway Training school.
  4. National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA): NTSA is responsible for development, coordination and implementation of road safety rules
  5. Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA): The Authority is responsible coordination of the Northern Corridor Transport Operations for efficiency gains
  6. LAPPSET Coordination Authority: To coordinate and oversee the implementation of the LAPSSET corridor and their respective components
